What is Short Term Therapy?

Some people come to therapy knowing what they want to sort out. A specific challenge, a transition they are in the middle of, a pattern that has started to cost them. What they do not want is something open-ended with no clear finish.

Short-term focused therapy at Resiliency Clinic is built for that. Six to eight sessions, goal-oriented and skill-based, aimed at changes you can put into practice while the therapy is still happening rather than long after it. You and your therapist name what you are working on in the first meeting, and the sessions are built around that rather than around a general check-in.

Therapy draws on evidence-based strategies from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), with an emphasis on emotional regulation, coping skills, communication, stress management, and resilience. The tools are meant to be usable outside the session, in the situations that prompted you to reach out.

Who Short-Term Therapy Suits?

This model fits you if:

  • You are dealing with one specific challenge or transition rather than several tangled concerns
  • You want practical strategies and coping tools more than open-ended exploration
  • You prefer a defined start and finish to an ongoing commitment

It is also a reasonable place to start if you have never tried therapy before and want a sense of what it is like before committing to something longer.

Short-term therapy is not the right format for everything. It suits mild to moderate concerns with one clear focus. If what you are struggling with is layered, or you want to understand where a pattern started rather than manage how it shows up now, longer and more exploratory therapy is the better fit.

Finding The Right Therapist

Every new inquiry at Resiliency Clinic is reviewed personally by registered clinical psychologist and founder, Michelle Sorensen, who matches you with a clinician suited to what you are working through and to this way of working. Not every therapist works in a short-term format, so the match matters more here than it does in open-ended therapy.

Short-term therapy is available in person in Ottawa and by secure video across Ontario and Quebec.
